teaches students to investigate how their academic and professional goals relate
to their surroundings –– a portable mindset that will enrich their lives wherever
they may go. Students are educated in the underlying currents of New Orleans
and the Gulf South through coursework related to the Atlantic slave trade, the
rituals of expressive circum-Gulfic and circum-Caribbean culture and resistance,
and the social, environmental, economic, and political history of the region.

This coordinate major is offered under the auspices of the New Orleans Center
for the Gulf South. All of our programs are inspired by the belief that the more
we understand where we are, the more fully we can engage in our democracy
and collective destiny.
Tulane UniversityMusic Theatre, BFABachelor of Fine Arts in Musical TheatreThe Musical Theatre B.F.A. is a voice-focused program, with additional
requirements for acting and dance. The curriculum stresses vocal training
and year-round participation in our musical theatre ensemble, Musical Theatre
Workshop, as well as courses in music theory, and musicology. In addition to
the one or more productions staged by the department each semester and
regular student-produced performances, the program is affiliated with Summer
Lyric Theatre at Tulane, an Equity summer stock company which produces three
full-scale musicals every summer.

The major also offers the flexibility for students to pursue courses in other fields
or to double major. Admission to the Musical Theatre B.F.A. program is based on an audition, which takes place during the sophomore year.

Composition Candidates for the M.A. degree in composition must complete at least 24 semester hours of course and must present a recital of original works.

Musicology Candidates for the M.A. degree in musicology must complete at least 24 semester hours of course work, pass a reading knowledge examination in one modern foreign language (French, Spanish or other with approval) by the end of the first semester, write an acceptable thesis, and defend this thesis in an oral examination.

In place of a thesis the candidate must perform a full-length recital of 90 minutes.

in composition, instrumental conducting, jazz studies, and instrumental
performance. Our program is generally a two-year (four-semester) course of
study, emphasizing advanced training in the applied area and in music history
and theory. Interested candidates in all concentrations must successfully pass
an audition and be admitted to the university's Graduate School.

All candidates must complete a minimum of 33 credit hours, take part in the
Graduate Colloquium (MUS 6900) every semester, present a graduate recital,
and pass both oral and written comprehensive examinations during the final
semester. Composition students have additional requirements.
